What is the difference between executive coaching and leadership coaching?

The terms executive coaching and leadership coaching are often used interchangeably, and there can be some overlap in the coaching approach and coaching topics discussed. The difference is in the nature and complexity of the role you have and therefore what is most relevant from a coaching perspective.

Executive coaching is typically for CEOs, business owners, members of the C-Suite and members of executive teams.

Leadership coaching is for leaders who span all other levels of the organisation – senior, middle, team leader, front-line, specialist, and of course leading self.  You don’t need to have staff reporting to you to benefit from leadership coaching.

Executives may also seek leadership coaching, and leaders may seek coaching in areas that are often of interest to executives.  The focus of your coaching will depend on your coaching goals, your role and your current circumstances.
